A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the BB Gun Shooting Range

I know this post doesn’t have much to do with writing, but I had to share this story.

I was out driving around with a friend yesterday through Oklahoma City and we were tooling down Reno.  Just as we drove under an overpass to a major freeway, we saw a white headed elderly woman and three young boys holding their hands over their heads while a city police officer drew down on them with a loaded pistol.

Something jumped within my stomach as I made a realization.

“Stop the truck!” I said to my friend.  “That’s my wife’s great aunt Dinky being arrested…I guess…”

We pulled over on the other side of the four lane street to watch the strangeness occur.  I called my wife to tell her what was transpiring.  She told me she would call aunt Dinky, but it was probably something to do with her son being a drug dealer.  I took this in stride and hung up after telling my wife I loved her.

We watched as one of the boys was led to the back of one of the patrol cars while aunt Dinky, hands over her head, spoke to the officer with the gun with body language that did not show fear, but looked like when my mother spoke to me about something I did wrong.  Soon, the officers kindly walked Dinky and the boys back to the old maroon van and they all took pictures together with Dinky’s cell phone for good measure.  It seemed to be resolved, so rather than interfere, my friend and I drove away.

A few minutes later, my wife called me with this story:

Apparently, aunt Dinky’s neighbor children and her own grandson had BB guns and did not have a place to shoot them.  They decided to go to the side of the street because aunt Dinky’s son used to repair washing machines in the vacant lot near the overpass on Reno, and she figured (in her strange reasoning) that there would not be any harm in taking the kids to the vacant lot to shoot their guns toward what trees were left in the city (I counted three of them).  Someone drove by, seeing the boys shooting their BB guns and reported them to the police as “some people are shooting guns on Reno” and the police rolled up with guns out ready for action.

It is a good thing Oklahoma City cops are not trigger happy, I suppose.
